Changing Server in Fortnite: Complete Guide with Tips

Hello, my friends! In this article, I will give you a step by step guide on how to change the server in Fortnite Battle Royale. Why may you need this? You may want to switch to try playing with new people.

Some players say that European and North American servers are too difficult and Brazilian Servers are very easy. So if you are a beginner playing at the easier server may be a good decision.

Anyway, let’s get to the switching process.

  • Step 1: Go to the main settings.
  • Step 2: Select a new server in “Matchmaking Region” option.
  • Step 3: Save the changes

That’s pretty much all you need to do in the game. Now you are connected to a new realm.

Changing a Server in Fortnite

Technical Side of the Question

There is one important thing you must always keep in mind: different servers are located in different geographical areas. It takes time for the signal to come from your computer to the server. That’s why you must pay attention to the latency (PING) value which is specified right after the name of the server. This value shows how much time is required for the signal to arrive from your computer/console to the server.

This value usually depends on the physical distance between you and the location of the region. There is one rule I usually follow: the lower the latency is the better! I always recommend choosing a realm with the lowest possible latency. If the value is below 100 milliseconds, the game will be smooth. But if it’s too high you may experience different input lags.

Remember: when you select a server which is located too far from your location, the latency will usually be very high. There will be other players which are located much closer to that server, meaning they will have lower latency. Thus, many of your enemies will have a TECHNICAL advantage since the beginning.

Don’t select realms located too far from you, unless you have a serious reason for this. If you want to maximize your advantages, always select realms with the lowest ping. Some of you may think that it’s not too important but believe me, it impacts into your overall performance a lot!

Thanks for a good and detailed guide! Every Fortnite beginner must read it, especially the part about latency. I also like to play at the server with the lowest ping value. I hate when the game lags. Sometimes milliseconds help to win. I don't play at a server if the latency is larger than 150 ms.

Once I joined a server with more than 300ms ping. It was on the other side of the planet. High latency doesn't allow to play as good as you can. You can't act in time very often.
